Most Manhattan apartments don't have a spare room for an office. These ideas fit a working desk into spaces you already have.
01Use an alcove
Many prewar and postwar apartments have alcoves beside a chimney or column. A floating desk across the alcove with shelves above makes a full office in about 3 feet of depth.
02Convert a closet
A reach-in closet 30 inches deep or more can become a "cloffice": remove the doors or use folding ones, add a desk shelf, power and a light.
03The hallway desk
A wide hallway can take a 16 to 18 inch deep desk for a laptop, with shelves above.
04Float it
A wall-mounted desk without legs makes a small room feel bigger and is easier to clean under.
05Go up
Shelves and cabinets to the ceiling use height that small apartments have in abundance.
06Fold-down options
When even a small desk is too much, a fold-down or secretary desk closes flat; see fold-down and secretary desks.
