A secretary desk is a cabinet with a front that folds down to become a writing surface. In a studio or small one-bedroom, it gives you a desk that closes up when you're done.

01How it works

The drop front is held by stays or lid supports. Inside are cubbies, small drawers and a power outlet. Closed, it looks like a cabinet or part of a bookcase.

02Sizes

- Writing surface: about 30 to 40 inches wide and 16 to 20 inches deep when open. - Writing height: about 29 to 30 inches. - Cabinet depth: 14 to 18 inches closed.

03Hardware matters

Use quality stays rated for the weight of the front and a laptop. Soft-close stays prevent the front from dropping.

04Power and light inside

Plan an outlet and a small LED light inside the cabinet so it works as a real workspace.

05Where to place it

- In a living room bookcase wall. - In a bedroom wardrobe wall. - In an entry or hallway.

06Is it enough?

For laptop work, email and bills, yes. For long hours with a big monitor, choose a fixed desk.
