A built-in desk for two people working from home.

How to design a built-in desk for two people in a New York apartment: widths, layouts side by side or facing, storage split, acoustics and lighting.

Many New York couples now both work from home. A built-in desk for two can fit in a second bedroom or along a living room wall, if it's planned for two people from the start.

01Width

Allow at least 48 inches of desk per person, so a two-person desk is 8 to 10 feet long. With file drawers at each end, plan on 10 to 12 feet of wall.

02Side by side or facing

- Side by side: uses one wall, easy to build, but calls can disturb each other. - Facing or back to back: better for calls; needs a deeper room. - L-shaped: one person on each wall of a corner, a good compromise.

03Split the storage

Give each person their own drawers and a shared central cabinet for the printer and supplies.

04Calls and sound

Soft surfaces reduce echo: a rug, fabric panels or open bookshelves help. Two people on calls side by side is hard in a small room; consider a door-closing nook for one.

05Light and power

Each workspace needs its own task light and power. Put outlets above the desk top in a recessed strip so chargers don't fall behind.
